Lipolysis works by breaking down and eliminating fat cells in targeted areas using injections such as Deoxycholic Acid (e.g., Belkyra/Kybella) or similar compounds. While this is a non-surgical treatment, some swelling and sensitivity is expected, and following proper aftercare will help minimize discomfort and enhance results.
What to Expect After Lipolysis Injections
Some temporary side effects are completely normal and part of the fat elimination process:
- Moderate to significant swelling, especially in the first 2–5 days
- Tenderness or soreness in the treated area
- Firmness or lumpiness under the skin (resolves as the body metabolizes fat)
- Bruising or redness
- A sensation of heat, tingling, or numbness
Swelling is a sign the treatment is working and typically resolves within 1–2 weeks. Visible results begin around 4–6 weeks, with full results in 8–12 weeks.
Lipolysis Aftercare Instructions
DO:
- Apply a cold compress gently for the first 24–48 hours (avoid direct ice on skin)
- Sleep with your head elevated (if face/neck was treated) for the first few nights to reduce swelling
- Take Tylenol for discomfort if needed (avoid NSAIDs if prone to bruising)
- Wear compression garments if recommended by your provider
- Drink plenty of water to support lymphatic drainage and fat metabolism
- Be patient—swelling is normal and temporary
AVOID for 3–5 Days:
- Hot showers, saunas, or steam rooms
- Intense workouts or anything that increases blood pressure/swelling
- Touching, massaging, or applying pressure to the treated area unless instructed
- Alcohol and salty foods (they may worsen swelling)
- Applying makeup or skincare over broken or irritated skin
