August 23, 2025

What to Expect After Your Injection

Kenalog-40 is a long-acting corticosteroid that reduces inflammation at the site of injection. It typically begins working within 24–72 hours, with noticeable reduction in swelling, redness, and discomfort over several days to a week.

You may experience:

  • Mild soreness or tenderness at the injection site (for 1–2 days)
  • A slight dimple or indentation at the injection site (temporary)
  • Thinning or lightening of the skin in the treated area (may occur in sensitive skin)
  • Gradual shrinking of the lesion (e.g., cyst or keloid)

Aftercare Instructions

DO:

  • Keep the treated area clean and dry
  • Avoid touching or picking at the injection site
  • Apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer if the area becomes dry
  • Resume your normal skincare routine after 24 hours, unless otherwise advised
  • Use SPF daily if the area is exposed to sunlight

AVOID for 24–48 Hours:

  • Applying harsh skincare ingredients (retinol, acids, or peels) directly on or near the site
  • Massaging, rubbing, or scratching the treated area
  • Heat exposure (saunas, steam rooms, intense workouts)
  • Facial treatments, microneedling, or chemical peels on the area

Common Side Effects (Mild and Temporary)

  • Mild pain, tenderness, or redness at injection site
  • Temporary skin thinning or discoloration
  • A small indentation or flattening of the skin
  • Lightening of the skin (hypopigmentation), especially in deeper skin tones

These effects typically resolve on their own within several weeks to months.

Rare Side Effects

Although rare, monitor for:

  • Persistent or worsening pain
  • Infection at the site (increased redness, swelling, pus)
  • Allergic reaction (itching, rash, or swelling away from the injection site)
  • Atrophy or permanent dimpling of the skin
