PicoSure Aftercare: What to Expect, How to Care for Your Skin, and When to Contact SKINLAB

July 19, 2025

Thank you for choosing SKINLAB for your PicoSure treatment! Whether you had PicoSure for skin rejuvenation, pigmentation, acne scars, or tattoo removal, proper aftercare is key to ensuring the best possible results while keeping your skin calm, protected, and glowing.

Here’s everything you need to know for a smooth recovery and optimal outcome.

What Is PicoSure?

PicoSure is an advanced laser treatment that uses ultra-short bursts of energy (picoseconds!) to target pigmentation, improve skin texture, reduce acne scarring, and stimulate collagen production—all with minimal downtime.

Depending on your treatment area and goals, you may experience different skin responses—but the aftercare is quite similar across all applications.

What to Expect After Treatment

Immediately after your session, you may notice:

  • Redness or mild swelling, similar to a light sunburn
  • Warmth or heat sensation in the treated area
  • Darkening of pigmented spots, which will naturally slough off over several days
  • Skin flaking or peeling, depending on the intensity of treatment
  • Mild sensitivity or dryness

These are normal and generally resolve within 24–72 hours, though some pigment shedding may continue for 5–7 days.

🧴 Aftercare Instructions

✅ DO:

  • Apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer 2–3 times daily to keep skin hydrated
  • Use a mild cleanser and lukewarm water—no hot water or harsh scrubbing
  • Wear SPF 30+ daily, even if indoors—your skin is more sun-sensitive post-treatment
  • Allow pigment to flake off naturally—no picking or peeling
  • Stay well-hydrated to support skin healing from the inside out

❌ AVOID for the First 3–7 Days:

  • Sun exposure (wear a hat and SPF even on cloudy days)
  • Intense exercise, sweating, saunas, or hot tubs
  • Makeup on the treated area (for the first 24 hours or as advised)
  • Exfoliants, retinoids, AHAs/BHAs, or active skincare products
  • Scrubbing, picking, or any type of abrasion to the area

Wait at least 7–10 days before resuming professional facials, microneedling, or other cosmetic treatments.

🩺 Common Side Effects (Normal)

  • Mild redness and swelling
  • Temporary darkening of pigmented areas
  • Light peeling or flaking
  • Itchiness or tightness as the skin heals

All of these are signs that your skin is regenerating and responding to the treatment.

⚠️ Rare Side Effects

Though rare, keep an eye out for:

  • Persistent or worsening redness or swelling beyond 3 days
  • Blistering or oozing
  • Prolonged sensitivity or burning
  • Skin discoloration (hyper- or hypopigmentation)
