What is PicoSure®?

PicoSure is a laser technology developed by Cynosure, a leading medical device company specializing in aesthetic and medical laser treatments. PicoSure is designed to deliver ultra-short picosecond pulses of laser energy to target various skin concerns, including tattoo removal, pigmented lesions, and skin rejuvenation.

Applications

Tattoo Removal: PicoSure is known for its effectiveness in tattoo removal. The ultra-short pulses of energy break down the tattoo ink into smaller particles, making it easier for the body's immune system to remove them. PicoSure can effectively treat various ink colors, including stubborn and hard-to-remove pigments.

Pigmented Lesions: PicoSure can target and remove unwanted pigmented lesions such as age spots, sunspots, freckles, and melasma. The laser energy breaks down the excess melanin in the skin, gradually lightening or eliminating the pigmented area.

Skin Rejuvenation: PicoSure also offers skin rejuvenation benefits. The laser stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, which are essential proteins for skin elasticity and firmness. This can help improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and overall skin texture.

Acne Scars: PicoSure has shown promise in reducing the appearance of acne scars. By targeting the scar tissue, the laser promotes collagen remodeling and skin cell turnover, leading to smoother and more even-looking skin.

How is the treatment performed?

The PicoSure laser device emits ultra-short pulses of laser energy targeted at the specific area being treated. The practitioner will use a handheld device to deliver the laser energy in precise and controlled bursts.

During the treatment, you may experience some sensations, such as a mild stinging or snapping feeling, heat, or a prickling sensation. However, PicoSure is generally well-tolerated by most patients, and the discomfort is often minimal.

The duration of a PicoSure treatment session depends on the size and complexity of the area being treated. It can range from a few minutes for small tattoo removals to longer sessions for larger areas or multiple concerns.

After the PicoSure treatment, the treated area may appear slightly red, swollen, or have a mild sunburn-like sensation. The practitioner may apply a soothing ointment or cooling gel to alleviate discomfort. They will also provide instructions on how to care for the treated skin, including avoiding sun exposure, applying sunscreen, and avoiding abrasive or irritating skincare products.

Multiple PicoSure sessions may be recommended for optimal results depending on the specific condition being treated. The exact number of sessions will vary, and they are usually scheduled several weeks apart to allow the skin to heal and the body to eliminate the targeted pigments or ink particles.

Before your PicoSure® treatment

Avoid sun exposure: Refrain from direct sun exposure or tanning beds for at least two weeks prior to the treatment. Sunburned or tanned skin is more prone to complications and may affect the effectiveness of the treatment.

Avoid certain medications: Some medications, such as blood thinners or photosensitizing drugs, may increase the risk of adverse reactions or complications. Consult with your healthcare provider about discontinuing these medications before the procedure.

Shave treatment area: If possible, shave the treatment area the day before the procedure to ensure optimal results. However, avoid waxing, plucking, or using depilatory creams, as these methods can irritate the skin.

Cleanse the skin: Cleanse the treatment area thoroughly on the day of the procedure to remove any makeup, lotions, or skincare products. Clean, dry skin allows for better penetration of the laser energy.

after your PicoSure® treatment

Protect the treated area: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF to the treated area daily, especially if going outdoors. Sun protection helps prevent post-treatment complications and maintains the results.

Avoid sun exposure: Minimize sun exposure and wear protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses when outdoors. Sun exposure can increase the risk of pigmentation changes or other complications.

Moisturize the skin: Keep the treated area moisturized with gentle, non-irritating skincare products to promote healing and prevent dryness or irritation.

Avoid harsh skincare products: Refrain from using harsh skincare products, such as exfoliants or retinoids, until the treated area has fully healed. These products can exacerbate irritation or sensitivity.

Avoid picking or scratching: Resist the urge to pick, scratch, or rub the treated area, as this can disrupt the healing process and increase the risk of scarring or infection.

It's important to note that the specific results and benefits of the treatment may vary depending on the individual's skin condition, treatment plan, and other factors. It's essential to consult with our specialists to determine if the treatment is suitable for your specific needs and expectations.
